Alia ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services.

1. Information We Collect

Account Data

  • User ID (automatically generated anonymous identifier)
  • Email address (optional, only if you sign in with Apple or Google and choose to share it)
  • Name (optional, only if you sign in with Apple or Google and choose to share it)

Reading Data

  • Books you track (title, author, cover image)
  • Reading progress (current page, total pages)
  • Reading dates (when you start and complete books)
  • Book ratings (1-5 stars)
  • Reading goals and streaks

Marginalia (Notes)

  • Text content (quotes, thoughts, questions, reactions)
  • Page numbers
  • Decorations and styling preferences
  • Photos you attach (stored securely in our cloud storage)

Subscription Data

  • Subscription status (free, trial, or premium)
  • Purchase information (processed by Apple, Google Play, and RevenueCat)

Analytics Data

  • Anonymous usage patterns (features used, screens visited)
  • Session recordings (with text inputs masked)
  • Device information (OS, screen size, app version)
  • App performance metrics

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and maintain the Alia service
  • To sync your reading data across devices
  • To process your subscription and enable premium features
  • To enable sharing features (reading journey cards, journal exports)
  • To improve and optimize our service
  • To respond to your support requests

3. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We share your data with the following service providers:

Supabase

Our backend database provider. Stores your account data, reading data, marginalia, and photos securely.

RevenueCat

Our subscription management provider (iOS only). Processes your subscription purchases and manages entitlements.

Google Books API

Used for book search functionality. We send search queries (book titles, ISBNs) but no personal information.

PostHog

Our analytics and product improvement provider. PostHog helps us understand how users interact with Alia so we can improve the experience. Data collected includes:

  • Anonymous usage patterns and feature interactions
  • Session recordings (with text inputs masked for privacy)
  • App performance metrics
  • Device information (OS version, screen size)

This data is used solely to improve Alia and is never sold or shared for advertising purposes.

Amazon

When you tap "Buy on Amazon" links within the app, you are redirected to Amazon's website. These are affiliate links—as an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases made through these links. No personal data is shared with Amazon through these links; only the book's ISBN is used to construct the product URL.

We do NOT:

  • Sell your personal data to third parties
  • Use advertising or ad-tracking services
  • Share your data with third-party AI services

4. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, all your data is permanently deleted from our servers, including:

  • Account information
  • Reading history and progress
  • All marginalia and notes
  • Uploaded photos
  • Reading goals and statistics

5. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

For All Users

  • Delete your account: Available in Settings > Delete Account
  • Export your data: Available via the reading journal export feature (Premium)

GDPR (European Union)

If you are in the EU, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict processing, data portability, and object to processing of your personal data. Contact us at support@aliareads.app to exercise these rights.

CCPA (California)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion, and opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell your personal information.

LGPD (Brazil)

If you are in Brazil, you have rights under the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados, including confirmation of processing, access, correction, anonymization, portability, and deletion of your data.

6. Data Security

We implement security measures to protect your data:

  • Authentication tokens are encrypted on your device
  • Data is transmitted over secure HTTPS connections
  • Photos are stored in encrypted cloud storage
  • Database access is protected by row-level security policies

7. Children's Privacy

Alia is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us at support@aliareads.app and we will delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of Alia after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
